Jeff Anthony Ries

Born 01/13/1971, Jeff lived his life following the greatest commandments: love your God with all your heart, soul and mind and love your neighbor as yourself. Jeff had humility and would rather see the good in everyone and everything, was kind and had a quiet wit and humor. He was quick to forgive and was the calm in every situation. Many friends said he was just a really good human.

In the early years, Jeff developed passions for most sports, cycling, weightlifting, board games (he was competitive), and his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes. Jeff rode Ragbrai, a strong rider, often completing the century loop. He was a CPA and quick with numbers, and at one time, owned his own business. In his spare time he enjoyed writing and even authored a book. We loved movies and Saturday morning matinees and equally loved music; always up for any concert.

We traveled when possible and in Kauai hiked every trail searching for waterfalls. Jeff would prefer spending his money on experiences rather than possessions. He also cared for the environment, and on hikes would pick up trash along the way. He cared for the homeless and made sure to have cash ready if asked for a hand up.

Fun facts: Jeff hated to have his picture taken, wasn’t a rule breaker, and ate leftovers cold. Favorite foods: lasagna, pineapple, broccoli and Watchamacallit candy bar. He watched mostly reality TV and wished to compete on Survivor.

I miss road trips with Jeff or simply hanging out together at home. I miss the way he would say “she’s mine” when I acted silly, and his kiss before each goodbye. I miss my strong husband with the soft heart and brown endearing eyes. His absence is felt daily.

Maria (sister) and Jeff were “two peas in a pod” growing up, and his parents, Merle and Shirley, raised a great man to have honest moral values. My wish is for others to be like Jeff, and that would inevitably make the world a better place. “Be the things you loved most about the people who are gone.”

I love you~Nancy Ries
