CHI Health Hospital opens first dedicated unit for organ donor care

January 28, 2025

In recent years, Live On Nebraska envisioned a specialized hospital unit where organ donor patients would receive the highest quality of care. The space would be staffed by doctors and nurses experienced in the organ donation process, who together with our own team, could maximize the healing power of each donor and provide peace and comfort to their families.

In November 2024, CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center – Bergan Mercy (CUMC – Bergan Mercy) made that vision a reality with the opening of the region’s first dedicated donor care unit.

CUMC – Bergan Mercy is now the designated primary organ procurement site for all CHI Health hospitals across Nebraska and southwest Iowa. This streamlined process ensures efficient, compassionate care for both donor families and recipients.

“I am thrilled to see the care and attention the hospital has given to honoring donor heroes,” said Kyle Herber, President & CEO of Live On Nebraska, referencing a new, private space for donor families and a donor memorial wall in the hospital’s lobby. “Donor families will experience an environment that supports their unique needs while honoring the impact of their loved one’s gift of life.”

The dedicated family space, located in the hospital’s intensive care unit, provides a calming atmosphere for grieving, reflection and rest.

Similarly to how a lullaby is played throughout the hospital after the birth of a child, CUMC – Bergan Mercy also plays music throughout the hospital during a hero walk as the donor is transported to the operating room.

“The new Donor Care Unit is an important step in supporting families through the organ donation process,” said Dennis Bierle, President of CHI Health CUMC – Bergan Mercy. “This new space and other program improvements are a reflection of our dedication to honoring this selfless gift.”
